PHOTOS. Out & About in L.P. 6/08/06

The (very steep) way down to the Sopa Cachi Market area.

The nice lady who changes our money for us. Lots of money-changers do their business right out on the streets, or the busy ones at least. The sign says "BUY DOLLARS."

The bakeries here emit the most wonderful smell of sweet bread.

A tropical-looking park in downtown La Paz.

That glassy building is the Universidad San Franciso de Asis. One of many in the city.

El Prado, the main thoroughfare in downtown La Paz.

Mountains all around.

The Unidad Nacionale de Arqueologia, the National Unit (or Institute, the name keeps changing) of Archaeology, where we stopped by to talk to some folks.

The building was designed by a Western archaeologist in the 1930's, and intended to be a hotel. Note the classy stonework, inspired by the architectural style of the ancient Andean empire of Tiwanaku. Eh?

Every archaeologist needs their Indiana Jones hat... and snakes preserved in formaldehyde.

Hangin' outside the Unidad.

"The woman is the proletariat of the proletariat." One of hundreds, maybe thousands, of slogans painted all over La Paz by Mujeres Creando ("Women Creating"), a local feminist group.

One of the ladies selling fresh-squeezed orange and grapefruit juices in the Sopa Cachi Mercado (Market). She wears the traditional/Indigenous-style tiered skirt and carries her baby in a manta, or blanket, tied around her neck.

More hills.

La policia.

EVENING:
At the apartment.
