Those are stone foundations of 2,000 year-old buildings, covered with paja (straw) to insulate them from the nighttime frost.







One of the grad students peers down into a vertical pit, where workers (see the blue hat?) are digging up fill, or dirt used to build other stuff, like mounds and pyramids...


Sifting away, looking for bits of ceramic, bone, what-have-you.


A nice after-lunch nap for the archaeologists.
